Back to the Beautiful (Cellar/Saalach) (2017)

Inspired by the Saalach river as both a site of natural beauty and potential border tension, Back to the Beautiful (Cellar) layers poetic and political video images, participatory encounters with the audience, and moments of live performance around the contradictory motifs of borders and beauty.  While grounded in the Saalach, the sections in this part of the participatory performative installation will also incorporate images and resonances from other sites of border anxiety globally.  Back to the Beautiful  (Cellar) has been developed by Sandra Chatterjee and Cynthia Ling Lee, in part through Borders Resurfacing, a long distance creative exchange by members of the Post Natyam Collective.

“Back to the Beautiful”has been developed through and shaped by dialogues between Tomaž Simatović, Sandra Chatterjee, Tomaž Tomaljanović, Cynthia Ling Lee and the Post Natyam Collective.

Back to the Beautiful (Cellar/Saalach) was created in the context of ‚Back to the Beautiful. Participatory and Performative Actions in Three Rooms’ In this collaborative project the Salzburg based artists Sandra Chatterjee and Tomaž Simatović entered into a dialogue with the visitors. Their work evolves around ways of migration, borders, rituals, protest, power and empowerment. In a series of artistic interventions taking place in the Kavernen, a studio and finally on the dancefloor of republic, people, movement and text converge. In between scientists are creating spaces of discourse and artistic proposals with their lectures by asking ‘How to Empower Anything With What?’. The evening culminates into a Party of social spaces, while savoring good food, massages and the proposals of a DJ.
