Nazaj k lepemu / Back to the Beautiful je mednarodni projekt dveh umetniških kolektivov, in sicer nemško-indijsko-ameriške naveze ter slovensko-avstrijske, ki se skozi različne prostorske konstelacije lotevata tem migracije, protestov ter moči in opolnomočenja.
»Nazaj k lepemu (Drava)« je tretja različica participatorno-performativne instalacije, ki je premiero doživela v Salzburgu leta 2017. Navdih za prvi projekt sta avtorci Sandra Chatterjee in Cynthia Ling Lee našli v neokrnjenem naravnem okolju reke Saalach, po kateri poteka meja s sosednjo Nemčijo, ki predstavlja potencialno območje mejnih napetosti. Leta 2018 sta ustvarili različico instalacije ob reki San Lorenzo, kjer se nahaja zadnja kitajska četrt v Santa Cruzu v Kaliforniji, ter z njo naslovili vprašanji zgodovinskih kitajskih migracij in ksenofobije v regiji. Za mariborsko predelavo instalacije sta avtorici zbrali podobje, vezano na obrežja reke Drave skozi čas, ki rezonira z raznolikimi podobami vodnih teles rek Saalach, San Lorenzo in Drave, ki jih avtorici povezujeta z lepoto, migracijami in/ali nacionalnimi mejami.
Druga performativna instalacija avtorjev Tomaža Simatovića in Tomaža Tomljanovića je nastala v okviru projekta »Nazaj k lepemu« kot refleksija na temo opolnomočenja v kontekstu demonstracij, protestov in množičnih plesnih ritualov, kot sta bila recimo plesna kuga v srednjem veku ali kultura rejva. Rezultat njunega sodelovanja so instalacije, ki temeljijo na konceptih del(ovanj)a in sodelovanja. Avtorja v središče svojega dela postavljata kodificirano besedilo, razstavljeno na zidu, ki ga udeleženci s kombinacijo aktivnosti in refleksije, strateško odkrivajo na predlagani »poti opolnomočenja«.
Občinstvo se bo skozi instalacijo premikalo v treh različnih prostorih Narodnega doma Maribor, kjer bo poleg besedilnih, vizualnih in performativnih elementov vključen tudi neposreden stik z vodo. Gre za preplet poetičnih in političnih video podob, interaktivnih srečanj z občinstvom in utrinkov živega performansa, ki črpa iz kontradiktorne motivike vode, meje in lepote.
Projekt je poleg mariborskega, podprl tudi münchenski oddelek za umetnost in kulturo, Avstrijski kulturni forum Ljubljana, Kuratieren in den szenischen Künsten (Univerza Salzburg in LMU München), Szene Salzburg ter Ministrstvo za kulturo. Gre za drugo predstavo v okviru mednarodnega MAMO abonmaja, v katerega so vključene tako javne institucije kot tudi nevladne organizacije, in sicer Moment, Nagib, Lutkovno gledališče Maribor, SNG Drama Maribor, Platforma sodobnega plesa ter GT22.

NAGIB and MAMO abonma (International Abonma of Maribor Organizations) is inviting you to joins us at the performative installation BACK TO THE BEAUTIFUL!
Back to the Beautiful (Drava) layers poetic and political video images, participatory encounters with the audience, and moments of live performance around the contradictory motifs of water, borders and beauty. Audiences move through an interactive installation that includes texts, videos, embodiment, and direct contact with water through ritual hand-washing and bottling of river water.
Back to the Beautiful (Drava) will be the third site-specific adaptation of this participatory performative installation. The work first premiered in Salzburg in 2017 and was inspired by the river Saalach, which forms the border between Germany and Austria, as both a site of natural beauty and potential border tension. In 2018, it was adapted to center the San Lorenzo River, site of the last Chinatown in Santa Cruz, California, while addressing historical Chinese migration and xenophobia in the region. For its Maribor incarnation, the artists will adapt the installation by incorporating local memories of the river Drava, resulting in an installation whose images and resonances draw from multiple bodies of water that have served as sites of beauty, migration, and/or national borders: the Saalach, the San Lorenzo, and the Drava.
The work of Tomaž Simatović and Tomaž Tomljanović was created in the frame of the project “Back to the Beautiful”. The work was created as a reflection on the topic of empowerment in the context of demonstrations, protests, and large-scale dance rituals such as the dancing plague in the Middle Ages and rave culture. The result of their work are performative and participatory installations focusing on the concept of labour, and collaboration. This work seeks to bring back to the surface the importance of collaboration as a strategy of empowerment, yet stimulate the sense, value and significance of beauty in collaborative work settings. At the centre of their work is the active discovery of a codified text exhibited on the wall. Participants are discovering the proposed “path to empowerment” strategically, through combination of activity and reflection.
