21 May 2021 – Handle with care with Sandra Chatterjee and Lau Lukkarila

FREISCHWIMMEN special edition

Online via zoom studio visit / Performance / Installation in English online  brut Extras {Work-in-Progress} {Archive of smells} {What do we need?}

Presented by brut Wien and Gessnerallee Zürich, this Handle with care special edition offers an insight into the work and research process of two artists. Sandra Chatterjee is researching the olfactory dimension of racism in SMELLS OF RACISM and in Lau Lukkarila’s kneading to the 3rd millennia the crew works with needs & wants and holding what is moved / moving what is held. Both artists are part of  the current selection of the international exchange and production platform FREISCHWIMMEN and are artists in residency at the network’s venues.

Sandra Chatterjee – SMELLS OF RACISM

What does racism smell like? From everyday prejudices against different body odours or different fragrance traditions to the philosophical treatises of Immanuel Kant: The connection between smell and racism has a long (western) tradition. With the installation and participatory performance SMELLS OF RACISM, choreographer Sandra Chatterjee and her team deal with the cultural and political dimensions of smells.

Sandra Chatterjee is a choreographer and researcher in the field of culture and performance as well as dance science. Current projects include the research project Border – Dancing Across Time (FWF P 31 958-G) at the University of Salzburg and the organization of the platform CHAKKARs – Moving Interventions. In her work with a focus on gender, migration and postcolonial studies, she always explores the intersection between theory and artistic practice. She was a guest professor for dance science at the ZZT Centre for Contemporary Dance of the University of Music and Dance in Cologne. She is part of the Rutgers Arts Online Faculty and is a lecturer at the University of Salzburg.

Lau Lukkarila – kneading to the 3rd millennia

kneading to the 3rd millennia (k3rdm) is a collaboration between artists Lau Lukkarila, Ju Aichinger, Manuel Riegler, Charlie Laban Trier and Tiran Willemse. Ideas that might manifest in some form: needs & wants, emotional body in the act of performing, feeling acutely in the doing (Audre Lorde, 1978), holding what is moved / moving what is held and feline energy field dynamics (Burton Silver and Heather Busch, 2014).

Lau Lukkarila is a choreographer and performer currently based in Vienna. They studied applied theatre, acting, contemporary dance, voice and performance at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Helsinki) and the Royal School of Performing Arts (Madrid). In 2018 they received the Austrian Federal Chancellor’s Office’s START scholarship for music and performing arts as well as the danceWEB Scholarship at ImPulsTanz Festival. At imagetanz festival 2020 they showed the solo piece Nyxxx.

The Handle with Care series grants sneak peeks into processes of artistic creation, experimenting with new formats and creating spaces for talking and the exchanging of views. Artists get the chance to try out parts of their work in front of a small audience, to receive feedback and to turn spectators into accomplices.

FREISCHWIMMEN is an international exchange and production platform for young groups and artists* from theatre and performance. It is supported by brut Wien, FFT Düsseldorf, Gessnerallee Zürich, HochX München, LOFFT – DAS THEATER Leipzig, Schwankhalle Bremen, Sophiensæle Berlin, and Theater Rampe Stuttgart.
